Southland Model Train Show - September 22 and 23, 2007

The Society had a static display at the recent Southland Model Train Show  held at Richards High School, 10601 S. Central Avenue in Oak Lawn, Illinois

At this event we presented two modules; the viaduct and mill, along with a number of locomotives on display.  The display items included John Derler's live steam model, and non-operating models of the Rocket and the Trevithic.  Martin brough a number of his books covering British locomotives.

There was interest from a number of potential new members.

Product Review

Large Scale Steam Locomotive
Review by Tim W. and John D.

BTS members have recently had the privilege and opportunity to review a rare, large-scale steam locomotive product and herewith present our findings.

The review sample in question is that of a Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 locomotive with auxiliary water tender. Although not British, with its light gray, lined maroon and black livery with gold lettering and clean lines free of most auxiliary equipment, this engine would not look too out of place on any British railway enthusiast’s layout.

This magnificent, ready-to-run engine comes with many separately applied details, working semi-automatic couplings, fully working valve gear and a fully compensated and equalized chassis. It has, so to speak, all the bells and whistles that one would expect in such an exquisite, large-scale product. The review sample was also equipped with a smoke generator and a unique non-electronic sound system. The headlight automatically illuminates in the direction of travel. The wheels are all metal with fine-scale flanges, but they are not insulated for two-rail operation, as this product, powered by a unique water-vapor reciprocating motor, is intended for the garden railway enthusiast. Realistic crew figures are installed on the footplate. Our review sample was also equipped with two bogie tenders, each of which fitted with a plethora of wires and things connecting the tenders with each other and with the locomotive.

However, in reviewing this sample, it was noted that the smoke generator did not appear to function properly. In spite of having a tender full of smoke fluid, virtually no smoke came out of the chimney. And the sound system, while functional, did not exhibit the incessant bell and whistle noises and “All Aboard” cries typical of offerings in smaller scales. Instead, only a soft ‘woosh-woosh’ sound could be heard coming from a speaker located under the chimney. These may not meet the expectations of some enthusiasts.

The review sample was very nicely and cleanly finished with sharp delineations between the colors and lining. An etched number plate was attached to the smokebox front. The finish is pristine. Weathered finish versions have been available in the past but it is understood that none are currently offered.

This model is believed to be sold out at the importer, but one may still be available at your local railway museum shop.
